A regular passenger ferry service between Basseterre on St Kitts and Charlestown on Nevis takes about 40 minutes. Many people live on one island but work on the other.

Tourism, being an important source of revenue, has led to the construction, in Basseterre, of a new facility which can accommodate the largest cruise ships arriving from the United States of America.
A new port facility at Long Point (Nevis), which can handle cargo and provide berthing for small cruise ships, was opened in September 1999.

The main airport for the islands is the Robert Llewellyn Bradshaw International Airport at Golden Rock, St. Kitts (3.2 km. from Basseterre), and this handles direct flights to and from the USA and Canada and connecting flights from London via Antigua. There are also direct flights to St. Kitts from London and Manchester. The Nevis airport, which takes smaller inter-island planes, is about 6 miles from Charlestown at Newcastle.
