Modern snuff bottles
Description:
Various techniques have been used to make these snuff bottles on sale at the Panjiayuan flea market in Beijing. Some have painted scenes and some have been facet-cut to reveal layers of different coloured glass.

Snuff bottle with the God of Wealth
Description:
This shows Liu Hai, the God of Wealth, with his 3-legged toad. Liu Hai is a Daoist figure, who was originally a minister of state about a thousand years ago. Stories tell how he owned a toad that could take him anywhere he wanted. Sometimes the toad disappeared down wells but Liu Hai could always tempt him out again with a string of coins.

Snuff bottle with landscape
Description:
The scenes on this snuff-bottle were painted from the inside using a fine angled brush. The Chinese writing on one side says ‘Landscape of mountains and water in the mid autumn month’. It gives a date from the traditional sixty year cycle that Chinese people used, in this case probably 1899.

Description:
The dragons on this 18th century snuff bottle are carved in a style found on objects from ancient China. When the bottle was made, studying ancient objects was a fashionable hobby for educated people in the Chinese court.

Description:
These could be used for holding open a Chinese scroll. Or someone could use them to hold down a piece of paper whilst painting or writing with a brush. The design of pine trees, plum blossom and rocks suggests ideas of long life and strength.

Water-pot or brush-tester
Description:
Small pots like this were used to contain clean water for diluting ink or colours in calligraphy and painting. This one could also have been used to wipe excess ink off a brush.

Brush-rest
Description:
A scholar could rest a writing brush, wet with ink, on a shape like this. This brush-rest is in the form of the famous poet Li Bai, who is often shown drinking. His servant is holding a cup. The end of the brush would rest in the curve of the poet’s waist or the crook of the servant’s elbow. This piece imitates brush rests in white jade.
