Portrait Sir William Penn, by Sir Peter Levy, 1618. The Penn family show the link between plantations and colonisation. Admiral Sir William Penn took Jamaica from the Spanish in 1655, and opened the island to British settlers. His son William established the colony of Pennsylvania in America in 1681. Although a Quaker, William Penn owned a number of slaves.
