Description:

The Merchants Hall, pen and ink drawing by Hugh O Neil, 1823. The Merchants Hall was home to the Society of Merchant Venturers, a powerful group of merchants established in 1522, which had control over foreign trade. The original Merchants Hall was pulled down in 1783, the one which replaced it was destroyed in World War II. The present Merchants Hall is in Clifton and is still home to the Society of Merchant Venturers. Today they are still connected with business, but have a mainly charitable role of fundraising.
