Emancipation Act passed
Commemorative medal produced to mark Emancipation, that is, the actual freeing of the slaves in the British colonies. The coin shows the figure of a slave breaking his chains and the words from the Bible, 'This is the work of the Lord, it is marvellous in our eyes.'
