Bristol overtakes London
This sketch, The Southwell Frigate, by Nicholas Pocock, drawn in about 1760, shows a Bristol ship anchored off the west African coast. Goods are being brought ashore and one box has 'Bristol' written on its side. Bristol overtook London in the 1730s, becoming Britain's largest slaving port.
