John Cabot sails from Bristol
This painting is called 'Cabot Leaves the Port of Bristol' and is by Ernest Board. Cabot sailed from Bristol to find a direct route to Asia and its exotic spices and silks. It is believed by many that he was the first European to reach the mainland of America and claim new territory for the King of England. The artist painted this picture in 1906, so it is an imaginary scene of Cabot going on board his ship the Matthew.
